Good Versus Evil
66Can Goodness Overcome Evil?
Sometimes at first blush, it may appear that evil has overcome good in the world. On further observation of our world, it is evident that goodness, kindness, generosity, empathy and love for other humans and living things make life worth living. Even in disasters and wars, there is beauty, power, wonder and awe. The effects of disasters and wars can be considered evil because of the hurt and suffering that they caused. Sometimes suffering is a vehicle to love, kindness or a change of the status quo, hopefully for the better.
Lets think back for a moment of the hurricane Katrina disaster of 2005. Some would argue that what happened to the people of New Orleans was mostly evil. They can only see the pain and suffering of those who lost loved ones and property. Others have seen the kindness and empathy of strangers juxtaposed to the devastation. Yet others would argue about retribution for evil behaviours. They argue that bad things happen to bad people, so those who suffer deserve it as a means to force changing behaviours.
Do you think that wars are instances when evil seems to overcome good? What about civilian casualties of world wars? Do they deserve the trauma, dismemberment and death? Did they die in vain or was there a peaceful resolution? There were several civil wars at different times in our history, for instance, The American Civil War. What was the result? Was it a necessary evil?

Dynamics, Just wanted to let you know about a certain Hurricane that hit New Orleans named Katrina which if you look up the meaning of name Katrina it means a Cleansing or in others word to be cleaned up. It seems Ironic that this named just happened to cause the clean up of a city that had so many things that were only to feed the earthly desire's of men and women. Could this have been a way of God Cleansing a City. Only the Lord knows that answer. Just a Thought. Amen
Justcallmeleroy, thanks for stopping by. I didn't know the maening of Katrina, but it sounds like it fulfilled the meaning of its name. Some times we all need reminders of what is the essence of our lives. Maybe Katrina was a reminder that good must prevail over evil.
Thanks for stopping by and for you thought provoking comment.
Thank you for the good word. I always consider Job, whose life appeared disasterous when in fact the events occurred because God bragged about his virtue.
There is beauty all around us. Even in the most difficult of circumstances. Goodness will prevail and it does exist. We have to look for it and we shall find it. Love that concept. Thank you for sharing this beautiful hub. I do not want to go on about the meaning of goodness. I salute your great effort here. Thank you for saying it.

In thinking about goodness versus evil argument in light of world events, the following came to mind: Disasters, naturally occurring and man-made. One can't but think that the power of evil is strong. Don't be fooled because the power of goodness is even stronger and more vital. We have seen time and time again, how goodness, kindness, consideration and empathy prevail, even in dark times. Remember Katrina, how many people were mobilized to offer help, even before the government acted. Yes my friends, evil exist, but so does kindness and generosity.
